Your site brings back memories for me, but you should see the Suwon are now. Its amazing how much things have changed in 15 years. For you, it would be hard to recognize the place now. Keep up the great work on your site, I'm sure many other folks will visit it with fond memories. Take Care! Patrick McDonald

Back then the main road from Pusan to Seoul was a gravel road and as I remember the gravel was rocks 2 to 6 inches in diameter. I wonder what korea is like today in the year 2000.

James S. (Jim) Allen jall@watervalley.net Great site Wayne! Thanks for your hard work. I was in the Air Police at Johnson Field, Japan, when the Korean War began, and was in the first Air Force unit to go to Korea. We arrived at an old Japanese air field that was later designated as K-2. I was injured on July 18, 1950, and after a stay in the hospital in Japan was sent back to K-2 where I remained until late October 1951. I recall when Colonel Powell, Commander of the 51st Fighter Wing was KIA in a F-51. I have many memories of Korea most of which are not good ones. Our ranks are thining out as we reach those "Golden Years" but our dedication to America has not changed one bit. God Bless America and her fighting forces. Nov. 06, 2001. Jim Allen.

Amye Smith makayla_ivy@yahoo.com When I started this project it was just research on another war that I opposed. I've come to understand throughout the year by the reserch that I always dreaded doing why someone can say I'm proud to have served and done my part.My view was very one sided and distorted before I had to look more into war. My friend is going to be inlisting soon and I've been so scared becuase hhe has become much more to me than a best friend. I don't have the courage to tell him this and I'm scared if I let him leave and never tell him I might not get the chance. He told me a week ago that he promised me he would come back but realistically he can't make that promise (I''ve lost friends, and family. I've had even more friends and family sent off already. this is so hard.),but I feel better understanding finally why he would even think about doing what I called a death mission. Thank-you and all the others who have helped me to understand and help to let go some of the pain from past and fear of the future.====Amye*

Robert E. (Bob) Merrill rmerrill_37069@yahoo.com Great site brings back the memories although I was at K6, Pyong Taek, with the Air Force in 1959 as a K-9 handler. There has been no place like Korea through my 20 plus years in the Air Force or since. The quanset huts and oil stoves with lines that froze up in winter. Thanks for the memories.
Dominic R. Paratore parato6@aol.com Thanks for your great site//I spent, starting Aug 1952 thru Mar 1953, at K-13 Suwon air base in the US Army. My memories, as a Battery Clerk w/Hq Btry, 50th AAA AW Bn (SP),goes to the days and nites I would be awaken by the roar of many take offs of the Sabres and Shooting Stars jets and sorry at times, to see explosions of a jet on take off. And to get accustomed to their firing (to adjust)of their guns any hour of day or nite, which at first starled me out of my cot ( a little price to pay in comparsion to what the pilots went thru). And on their return, I enjoyed watching the flip and spins they did to show their successes. I have photo's of a few planes, near my hut, of Sabre's #FU-631&FU-903 and a Shooting Star #FT-532. I often wonder what ever happened to the pilots and planes. I recall a 0 degree New Years day 1953, watching a USO Show of movie stars Jan Sterling and husband Paul Douglas at the air base. My photo shows 8th Fighter Bomber Wing in the background of the preformers. She mixed in with everyone,it was very warm for them to be there with us. At one time, at the air base,we had Dick Contino preform for us. He also drank with us at our club. We had our share of bedcheck charley & our guard duty in 0 tempature and I know of our battery unit going to the line in rotation. We have our reunions every two years. At the first reunion I found out that in Feb 1953 Ted Willams (baseball) crashed landed safely;at that time I don't remember if I knew about it. I started in Albany, NY next Ft Devens, Mass flew (1st time,2 engine w/stewdress)to Ft Bliss, Tx home again then 1st time again train across to Ft Lawton, Wash. the USS Marine Phoenix troopship to Yohokoma, Japan. Cp Drake back on the same ship to Inchon, Korea. Climbed down side onto LST and landed on shore(not the invasion). Stayed overnite, next AM trucked to K-13 Suwon air base. Went to another unit in Pusan area.(R&R Toyko Jan1953 on Globemaster from Kimpo). from Pusan home on the USS Marine Lynx to Seattle then flew to see the Statue of Liberty on our way in landing at LaGardia air port. Home at last from Cp Upton NJ by train. Jan 15th 1954 I walked on 20 degree nite, about 2 miles, deep thinking what my life would be from this point on (I had seen my family that weekend before discharged). I am proud of my service in the United States Army during the period.
Herbert D Bruce herbie34@juno.com Keep up the good work!! Very interesting.
Richard L Finch gerpenn@yahoo.com Went to Korea/Kimpo AFB In 51. Was at Kimpo very short time, maybe one and one half months. Was sent out to Yong Pyong Do Island to sent up a homing site with one other radio operator, two power supply men and two radio mechanics. Island was North North West of Inchon. Time at Kimpo (K-14) was with the 1993rd AACS Squadron. Went thru to harassing flights of Piss Call Pete and Bed Check Charlie two or three times. The call letters of the homing site was TK (Tango Kilo) which was done by an automatic keyer. Two buddies of mine that I remember the names of that stayed at Kimpo was, Charlie R. Booze and Winifred E. Myers or Meyers. Booze, Myers and myself volunteered to go to Korea from the garden paridise of the Pacific, Hickam AFB at Honolulu. We all three did not like it there at all. I had contact with a: jshafer@icc.net, and he sent me a picture of me and my buddies in our tent at Kimpo. I tried to reach him with a message and was told it sould not be delivered because of a faulty address. I do not believe this. If anyone has any info on this I would really like to hear about it.....Thanks to whomever answers me....gerpenn@yahoo.com....

Oren Anderson kvt6263@cox.net Great site Wayne. I was at K- 55, 314th Air Div, Osan AB 62- 63, 10 years after you, but the quonset huts and PSP on the flight line was the same when you were there and little had changed in ten years, including some holes in our planes that strayed too close to the DMZ. I married my Korean YOBO in 1964. We were together 36 years when she passed in 1998 from cancer. I went back to Korea in 1999 to visit my Korean inlaws and the changes were unbelievable. Your picture of an F-16 with the Suwon hi-rise apartments in the background says it all. Osan AB and the town of Songtan are the same. I got an old retired Air Force Msgt. who lived and worked at Osan to give me a tour of the base. The anti aircraft batteries that used to surround the base had been replaced by patriot missles manned by FEMALE U. S. Air Force Security troops. The old snack bar was replaced by a food court with a Piza Hut, KFC, Burger King, and a Dairy Queen. Times have changed. Again, great WEB Page. Andy

Dominic R. Paratore parato6@aol.com Hi, would it be possible to make a few corrections in my guestbook comments. I would appreciate it very much. Could someone change, where I list Cp Upton to read Cp Kilmer plus where I have Lagardia Airport to read Idlewild Airport. Thank you very much, hope it isn't much of a problem. Thanks for a great site, I enjoy your music also, I'm always trying to find music we heard while we where in Korea at the time. It was, I think a popular Japanese song or tune. Continued success and thanks again. Best Always, Dominic R. Paratore (Please don't list this as a comment in your guestbook)

patterson, joe p great site..never thought i would ever see a photo of the airmans beer hall. i worked in wing intelligence from aug 1952 until july 1953. i remember air policemen bringing "bing" into the beer hall for a coca cola while they knocked back a few cold ones. on second i dont remember them being too cold and there was no selection of brands. we would have bud for a couple of weeks, then pabst blue ribbon for a while and then maybe nippon or asahi. never a choice, but the prilce was right at 10 cents or so.looking back i guess that was the best year of my young life. now at 73 i cant understand some of these "peace at any price" demonstrators. keep up the good work.
