Bridging the Communication Gap
The communication gap is never so vivid as when a well-sighted person attempts to deal visually with someone who isn't so fortunate in that currency. Believe me! I'm half- blind myself so I know whereof I speak.
The gap can surface almost from the first word of communication. To give you a specific example, suppose you are showing a low-vision student how to use a computer. Your first step might be to demonstrate how to open a file. Say you do this by moving the cursor to the File menu. But suppose you fail to realize that the student may not even see the cursor and wouldn't for that reason have the slightest idea what you were doing or even that you were doing something. In a situation like this you have to be very explicit verbally and have a clear and distinct way (possibly using a pointer) to make it clear. Not doing so can create a huge gap and be very frustrating for the student.
My point is that it can even be the most common things, those that we take for granted and can almost become unconscious, that can create the difficulty communication wise.
