The Basic Tennis Serve
Service with a smile, basically speaking.

The basic tennis serve is a flat overhead serve hit directly in line with its target. It is the simplest serve in the game and is usually the serve of choice for the novice. It is also a very effective weapon for the more advanced player who can hit the ball harder and more accurately than the beginner. If the ball is hit at the top of its rise, there is no spin from the racket. But you do get some topspin from the bounce. The initial speed is determined by the speed of the racket at the moment of impact with the ball and by the characteristics of the racket strings.

A simulation must generate answers to questions. In programs I've written to study racket mechanics, the questions deal with the way the ball is hit and the simulations show how the ball moves when struck in prescribed ways. Each program uses a math model of the dynamics and takes into account appropriate physical properties of the racket, ball, and air resistance. As typical experiments for the basic serve, you can find the best way to hit the ball to your target or find the maximum speed the ball could attain at the target.
