A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE
CHRISTIAN HOME CHURCH OF CHRIST
The Lord's
church was established about 34 A.D). The church is identified and seen
in
the pages of the New
Testament. The church of Christ was established everywhere
that
people obeyed the planted good
seed of the word of God, Luke 8:11-16.
The Christian Home
church of Christ in Wicksburg, Alabama, was established upon the same
gospel message which was
preached by the apostles in the first century.
Here is a brief skeletal history of
the church of Christ in Wicksburg, Alabama.
1895-1903
The church had her
humble start due to the efforts and labors of E. Mim King a member of
the Lord's church in Ariton,
Alabama. Brother King worshipped with the Hamilton
Crossroad
church of Christ. This good man
began to preach in the Wicksburg community in brush Arbor meetings.
Faithful gospel preaching
laid the foundation for the church to be established. From these
evangelistic
efforts the Lord's church would be
brought into this area.
1907-1910
Brother King
and his family moved from Ariton to Wicksburg, Alabama in 1907. The
Christian Home
church of Christ was clearly comprised
of just a few families with many of them having direct family
ties in Ariton and Brundige, Alabama.
Several
families later worshipped regularly in a building which was located on
land on, or near the Jim Harris
property. The first meeting
house was constructed with very simple rough-edged boards. The
original building
was about 20 feet wide and about 40
feet long. A spring of water was directed into a watering pool or
trough
which served also as a baptistery. The
water was part of a place called the Choctahatchee Wells Creek.
The congregation was named Christian
Home because of the number of New Testament Christians which
lived in the community.
In 1910 there were about 30-40 people
that attended the services regularly. The church continued meeting
on or near the Jim Harris property for
a decade or perhaps a little longer.
1919-1920
The
Christian families that worshipped together decided they needed to move
the congregation to another location.
Another
building was soon erected for the brethren to worship in. The location
of the new building was
on some property that was secured and
purchased by E. Mim King from a family named Perry. The new
building would stand and be used for
the next two decades. The auditorium had six windows on each side
of the building and two large doors
were situated on both ends of the building.
A
cemetery soon became part of the church property in 1910. An acre
of land was also purchased by
E. Mim King for the cemetary.
Isophene King a young pre-teenage girl was the first person to be buried
in the newly purchased church
cemetery.
1944-2008
In 1944 a block building
was erected on the same site as the first building. The new building had
a man-made baptistry. Later
classrooms were added to the structure in the early 1960's. A
fellowship building was added behinded
the church building in the 1970's. The auditorium was
completely refurbished as the 20th
century came to close.
