Article 44 of the Constitution of the International Union UAW states:

"The Local Union shall have the following Standing Committees:  Constitution & Bylaws, Union Label, Education, Conservation & Recreation, Community Services, Civil Rights, Citizenship & Legislative, Consumer Affairs, Veterans, and a Women's Committee...".  Local 2209 has all of these and a Chaplains Committee as well.

This page will give you a brief overview of each committee and how they work.  When you link to their page, we will have a list of their committee members and any other pertinent information.

What follows is a brief description of what each committee is responsible for.  Use the links to go to their page and find a list of their members.

Responsible for submitting original and/or amended bylaws provisions to the Local Union membership for discussion and approval.  This Committee shall monitor the required Local Union Bylaws procedure to insure compliance with the current Bylaws and Constitutional provisions.

Once the amended Bylaws provision(s) has been approved by the Local Union membership (by a 2/3's vote), this Committee shall monitor the process to insure the amendment is immediately submitted to the International Executive Board pursuant to Article 37, Section 3 of the Constitution.

This Committee helps to emphasize the importance of supporting those goods produced in union shops, by union members under the union-won working conditions.  This Committee also helps bring to the attention of our members those products produced under non-union conditions and by anti-labor manufacturers (our Do Buy/Don't Buy lists are one way they do this).

This Committee is responsible for putting into operation the education mandate adopted by the UAW Convention delegates.  Materials are developed to help inform the membership on issues, train new committeepersons, leaders, and mobilize greater solidarity behind the programs of the Union.  An example is when a new Election Committee is elected in January.  The Education Committee will set up training for all Election Committee members, taking them through the process of an election.

This Committee works to promote meaningful recreation and leisure-time activities and also develops action programs to help correct energy and environmental problems.  They work closely with the Executive Board in putting together the Family Picnics and, as for the conservation end, they save pop cans at the Union Hall.  Next time you stop at the Hall, if you have a soda, make sure you recycle it!

Anyone who stopped at the Union Hall during the layoff for food got a first-hand look at what this Committee does.  They were put in charge of getting the Food Kitchen set up from the donations collected from the membership - and they did a fantastic job!
The perform the important task of getting help for members and their families in time of need.  These committees work through public and private organizations to assure the problems faced by members in emergency situations get the needed help.

They serve as guardian over the Local Union's commitment to assure members full rights regardless of religion, race, creed, color, sex, political affiliation, national origin, age, or handicap.  The Committee informs members of steps and procedures, including filing of complaints and hearings, whenever a member believes their rights have been violated, either by Management or other Union members.

This is the work site political-legislative arm of the Local Union and is the vital workplace political activator.  The Citizenship & Legislative Committee is the basic link with our members at work in assisting the implementation of voter registration, get-out-the-vote drives, letter writing campaigns, and publicizing the issues and positions of public officials.  They also encourage special groups (youth, women, minorities) to become active.

This Committee strives to keep the membership informed on truth in lending, truth in packaging, truth in advertising, labels on products, etc.  This is a very vital Committee so each Union member can obtain a maximum value for monies spent.

This Committee is to provide needed information to veterans and their families.  They monitor all legislation dealing with veterans.

This Committee is established for the purpose of promoting greater understanding of the UAW's policies and programs and to further the objectives of our Union in the community in which they live.  The Committee conducts programs which are of special interest to women, and encourages women to become active in the Union.

This Committee is recognized to give religious guidance to those in the membership that may need such.
