Filament 0092

Back to Home Page

Purpose of Web Page

The purpose of this web page is to present the physical characteristics of a filamentous bacteria that is present in wastewater.  Filament 0092 is Gram negative and Neisser positive.  Filament 0092 is straight to slightly curved 0.8-1.0 µm wide and 10-60 µm long.  Cells are rectangular in shape (0.8-1.5 µm) without constrictions at septa.  No attached growth is observed and no sheath.

This photograph of filament 0092.  The arrow is pointing at a 0092 trichome.  0092 is normally found within the matrix of the floc and is usually missed during a microscopic examination unless a Neisser stain is done on the sample.

This is a Neisser stain of 0092.  0092 stains Neisser positive--that is, the filament would stain a reddish-violet color as opposed to yellow.  Notice 0092 intertwined with the floc.  This photo was taken at a magnification of 1000x.

This is a Gram stain of 0092.  The large arrow is pointing at 0092-Gram negative, whereas the small arrow is pointing

at a Nocardia filament-Gram positive.
