Back to Home Page

Purpose of Web Page

The purpose of this web page is to present the physical characteristics of a filamentous bacteria that is present in wastewater. Filament 0411 is an irregularly bent filamentous bacteria--it has rod-shaped cells (0.8 µm-2-4 µm) and the filament itself can grow to a length of 50-150 µm.  The cells give the trichome the appearence of a "chain of cells".   There is no sheath and attached growth.  Filament 0411 is Gram negative and Neisser negative.  There are no sulphur granules.

This is a photograph of filament  0411.   Notice the filament sticking out of the floc in the middle of the photo.  The "chain of cells" is apparent.

This is a Gram stain of filament 0411.  The arrow is pointing at a 1701 filament.  0411 is two trichomes above 1701 with the smaller rod shaped cells and the "chain of cells" appearence.
