Filament 0581
Purpose of Web Page
The purpose of this web page is to present the physical characteristics of a filamentous bacteria that is present in wastewater. Filament 0581 is similar in appearence to Microthrix parvicella. The differences are that 0581 stains Gram negative and Neisser negative, Microthrix parvicella stains Gram positive and Neisser negative. 0581 has a cell diameter of 0.4-0.7 µm and a filament length of 100-200 µm. It is primarily found within the floc but it can be found floating freely in the bulk solution. 0581 has a tendency to bend and curve like Microthrix parvicella.

This is a photograph of filament 0581 at a magnification of 1000x. 0581 is the curved filament extending out of the floc. |
This is a photograph of a lone 0581 filament floating in the bulk solution. 0581 has one of the smallest widths of any of the filamentous bacteria. |
