Filament 0961

Back to Home Page

Purpose of Web Page

The purpose of this web page is to present the physical characteristics of a filamentous bacteria that is present in wastewater.  Filament 0961 is a straight filament having a length between 40-150 µm.  Individual cells are rectangular in shape (0.8-1.4 x 1.5-4 µm). It is Gram negative and Neisser negative with no sulphur granules.  0961 is characterized by its "transparency", that is, there is no apparent visible contents within its cells.  No attached growth.  0961 does not extend out too far from the floc under normal conditions.

This is a photograph taken at a magnification of 1000x using a phase contrast microscope.  The arrow is pointing at a filament of 0961.  Notice the rectangular cells and the absence of any attached growth.

This photo shows a typical 0961 trichome.  Notice the distal portion of the filament, the cell is dead and can be distinguished from the rest of the filament in that the dead cell has a slightly different shade.  The remnants of the dead cell is that of a rectangular shape.  Notice the lack of any attached growth.
