Filament 1701
Purpose of Web Page
The purpose of this web page is to present the physical characteristics of a filamentous bacteria that is present in wastewater. 1701 is a rather short filamentous bacteria ranging in length from 10 to 100 µm, having rod-shaped cells (these cells appear like miniature weenies). These cells have sizes that vary (0.7-1.0X1.0-2.0 µm) in length and width. The trichome tends to be short and slightly curved. A sheath can be found surrounding the cell. 1701 is found primarily within the floc. 1701 is Gram negative and Neisser negative. Attached growth is always observed unless the filament is extending out of the floc.

This is a photograph of filament 1701 at a magnification of 1000x. The arrows are pointing at the beginning and end of one individual 1701 cell. Notice the attached growth. |
This photo of 1701 was taken at a magnification of 1000x using a phase contrast microscope. This particular trichome has undergone some type of stress as can be seen by the empty sheath left behind when a cell dies. Notice the rod-shaped cells still living with the sheath. |
