Purpose of Web Page

The purpose of this page is to present the physical characteristics of fungi.  Fungi are recognized by their large trichomes--300-1000 µm in length and their large rectangular cells between 3-8 µm wide and 5-15 µm long.  True branching is characteristic of fungi.  The other filamentous bacteria that has true branching is NocardiaFungi are found in wastewater in small numbers but if there is large increase in Fungi concentration it is an indication of a change in pH of the activated sludge.  Low pH are excellent conditions for the increase in fungi.

This photograph was taken at a magnification of 100x.  Notice the large sized fungi.

This is another species of fungi.  Notice the branching of this mycelial mass.  There are other filamentous bacteria present in this photo.  This photo was taken at a magnification of 100x using a phase contrast microscope.

Notice the lone fungi present in the sludge matrix.   The branching associated with fungi is apparent in the photo.
