  1. http://www.nakedsheep.com No charge for postage. I've purchased Trekking XXL from here: blues (#29), and turquoise blues (#77).
  2. http://www.elann.com recommended for good prices. I've purchased addi circs. Shipping/handling is by weight, $3.00 minimum. Very good website, extensive yarn collection, other supplies.
  3. http://www.needletrax.com owner moderates socknitters; author of the sock software. Also sells yarns such as koigu and little lola.
  4. http://www.theyarnconnection.com is in Manhattan, 218 Madison Ave, 2nd floor, between 36th and 37th. There's a 10% coupon that can be printed from the website. Closed Sunday.
  5. http://www.smileysyarns.com is in Queens, and can be reached by subway or car. Large discount yarn with a big internet sale presence as well. Includes some sock yarn (such as Kroy for $1.99 at present). Of course there's NY sales tax.
  6. http://www.theyarnco.com is on Broadway at 82nd Street (one block south of B&N, one flight up, next door to Laytner's). Nice to have a supplier in the neighborhood; they do carry addi's. Koigu and Debbi Bliss cashmerino but otherwise light on sock yarn. Interesting designer yarns.

  11. http://www.knittinghands.com This store is in Brooklyn. Offers classes as well as yarn, doesn't sell yarn online.

  38. http://www.joslynsfiberfarm.com advertisez on socknitters, site is a trifle slow (or at least was so the first time I visited). Sock yarns are mainly all wool, but there is also some nice silk-and-wool in 3 different weights.
  39. http://www.myfathersbeads.com in Coopersburg, Pennsylvania. According to the socknitters ad, has sock yarn (a new line of business). Web site doesn't yet show this, except for the new class in sock knitting.
  40. http://members.rogers.com/doublediamonds is a Canadian on-line yarn source. In particular, good illustrations of the way Confetti knits up, as well as the matching solids. Mail order only; shipping cost by purchase amount.

  48. http://www.strickwear.com Some interesting pictures, sells patterns. Also links to a not-so-commercial site that sells wool reinforced with nylon sock yarn, locally made. It's shelridge farms.

  50. http://www.tradewindknits.com/index.html this is Lucy Neatby's site. Patterns, information on various aspects of knitting, web links, yarn (such as the new Opal glitter), and list of retailers. Canadian.
  51. http://nandia.com specializes in cashmere. Sells yarn by skein and cone, 8ply for knitting (and 2ply laceweight). The 8ply is 6+sts/in on #5 needles. On sale: $130 for a 1 lb cone, or $13 for 1.5 oz skein. Variety of colors. Shipping cost is by weight.
  52. http://www.woolieewe.com has a large yarn list, needles, other things (as: needlepoint). Located in Plano, TX.
  53. http://redbird.ca/ an online Canadian supplier, prices in Canadian dollars. Lots of sock yarn, reference to ebay sales.
  54. http://www.patternworks.com (also listed as http://knittingonline.com) is now only mailorder but has a very nice supply. One socknitter says that, since they've been taken over by another company, the service is not as good as it once was.
  55. http://www.carolinahomespun.com/ under yarn go to nightmagic for glow-in-the-dark yarn. Useful for late night walking, headband accent, etc. There's a pattern for a headband in which this is used for the pattern (snowflakes). See also www.yarnfwd.com for nitelite under threads. But note that this is a thread, not a yarn.

  62. http://www.thelambswool.com is in Lansdale, PA. It carries yarn on cones, has some reasonable prices, but doesn't appear to be set up to take orders over the web. Links to yarn manufacturers.
  63. http://onceuponapattern.com/ vintage crochet and knit patterns. There's a particularly good description, illustrated, of mending knitting.
  64. http://www.jklneedles.com has all kinds of online needle crafts (quilting, needlepoint, etc) as well as knitting. Pretty nice selection of sock yar with good pictures. Shipping is based upon purchase price. Store in Concord, NH.
  65. http://www.paradisefibers.com/ has mill ends and coned yarn, needles, etc. for knitting and crochet. Spinning wheels too; in WA. I am on the mailing list.
  66. http://www.knitplace.com is an online store, mainly coned yarn. Run by bfuria who also sells on ebay. Quite reasonable prices and reasonable shipping. Sorted by composition of yarn; home page lists everything.
  67. http://www.rmyarns.com is another seller of coned yarn, mostly for weavers, but also some thick enough to use for hand knitting without plying. Need to check the ypp (yards per pound) again that of other like-composition yarns.
  68. http://www.yarnexpress.com is an online discount specialty (and novelty) yarn place.
  69. http://www.yarnheaven.com may be interesting, too. Claims to be a discount yarn store. In Arlington, TX. Not really set up to take net orders, but will accept email querying things such as prices, etc.
  70. http://www.yarnware.com is an online yarn store. Has some very nice stuff, and a large sale page. Nicely organized but slow (interesting: uses Lotus). Current sale has Fortissima. Shipping cost by amount of purchase.
  71. http://www.spindling.com/spincraft.html offers patterns and stuff for spinners. In particular there are patterns for mittens with partial fingers and mitten flap. Patterns are $4.25 each, buy 4 get the 5th free, shipping is free. Some quite interesting mittens and socks here (holding hands mittens, for example).
  72. http://www.joyfulknitter.com/ is actually a joyful spinner. Offers handspun and died yarn (with a pattern). Mostly one-of-a-kind, first-come gets it.
  73. http://www.bigskyknitting.com primarily patterns and the books written by the site's owner. She is a cancer survivor and offers a chemo cap pattern as well. There's an email newsletter emphasizing cables. I wrote to Jane when she solicited applications for an editor! There's a links page, etc.

  5. http://www.bonniefranz.com is the home of Stranded, a new magazine, which may be interesting. Mainly sells patterns.
  6. http://www.ditzyprints.com/dpburnchart.html has a chart on how to tell fiber content by burning it.
  7. http://escproductions.bizland.com/stonesneatstuff/index.html for historical and victorian knitting.
  8. http://www.artloft2000.com is a Canadian no-ad craft information site (voluntary contributions requested). Has tips, links, patterns, chat groups. Variety of crafts, including(of course since it's here) knitting. There's a writers guide, etc, for sharing patterns on this site.
  9. http://www.dnt-inc.com/index.shtml is a site with free patterns for toys, some animated knitting techniques, and a list of related links.
  10. http://www.sweaterscapes.com/ has some great online tutorials (with patterns) including socks. They also sell peace fleece.
  11. http://www.tata-tatao.to/knit/e-index.html ...a Japanese web site (with some English pages) on the ABCs of knitting. Quite charming, quite interesting. And for some peculiar reason the first sock pattern has kitchener on the heel!

  15. http://www.needlecraftuniversity.com offers classes (knit, crochet, etc) online, has a library of abbreviations, sizes, stitches (illustrated), and a page of links.
  16. http://www.knittingfool.com offers a sweater pattern generator, dictionary, stitch list, etc etc. Maintained as a hobby by someone who self-describes as most enjoying programming, math, and knitting. Interesting description of choice of webhost (uses Cold Fusion, and needs SQL access to a database).
  17. http://fibergypsy.com/ has links to information about fiber (yarn equivalents, fiber care, other charts), knitting, and is part of a fiber webring. Looks like another trail to explore.
  18. http://www.knittinguniverse.com is the website of Knitter's Magazine.
  19. http://www.modecard.com/combined.htm has a very good description of a knitting technique designed for speed and to easy wrist strain. The purl technique is not the one I am using at present and could be quite helpful.
  20. http://www.ctsheep.org is the sheep & wool for Connecticut. There's a festival on April 26th in Vernon, Ct (near Hartford).

Mailing lists and organizations.
  1. http://www.socknitters.com is the home page of socknitters. From here there are links to links, tips, abbreviations used (http://www.socknitters.com/abbrev.htm), and many goodies. This is a yahoo group.
  2. http://www.knitlist.com The home page of the original knitlist (now a yahoo group), with links to useful information such as a needle size conversion chart, and stores. Not to be missed: a listing of events!
  3. http://www.woolworks.org non-commercial information for knitters. Patterns, links to other resources, reviews, discussion, etc.
  4. http://www.tnna.org is The National Needlework Association and includes a retail directory. The association is for the trade only; upscale.
  5. http://www.tkga.com is The Knitting Guild of America home page. I had a pattern in Cast On and used to be a member but let it lapse.


Pictures and patterns from the web (these URL's are probably less stable than most).

  7. http://www.burri.com/ is one of the listmoms for knitlist, and includes (amongst other items) an interesting looking norwegian pattern sock.
  8. http://www.woollythoughts.com is actually a retail site; it's an English couple doing maths-related knit and other designs. Quite interesting.
  9. http://www.homestead.com/knittingfun has a good russian join PDF link, lots of links of free patterns, etc.
  10. http://www.royea.net is another couple with home pages. There's a very good desription, with pictures, of sock knitting as well as a chart and informative links.
  11. http://www.princeton.edu/~ezb/sockform.html is an on-line calculator. Plug in some numbers, submit the form, get a pattern.
  12. http://www.chez.com/jacquardtricot/tricotheque.htm is a French website, and http://babel.altavista.com/translate.dyn is a place where one can get phrases or web pages translated. Comes out rather oddly for knitting terminology, but good to know about. The french woman has subsequently joined socknitters.
  13. http://www.realisinghumanpotential.com/J/ is a UK website with an easy sock pattern. I find the change in language (US to UK English) rather amusing.
