William J. Knight was an original recipient of the Medal of
Honor for his roll in what history has recorded as Andrew's
Raid, and Walt Disney later imortalized in his movie, The
Great Locomotive Chase. William was the train engineer who,
along with 19 other soldiers and two civilians (inlcluding
James Andrews - Union spy and leader of the raiders)
captured a Confederate train and set out to destroy tracks
and burn bridges while making a run for Union lines.
Ultimately, the raiders were captured, Andrews and seven
others were hanged as spies. William and a number of other
raiders managed to escape, and with the help of southerners
loyal to the Union, made their way back to Union forces.
[2474]
William's mother died when he was still and infant, and his
father died when he was only 3 years old. William was
raised by his grandparents.
[2476]
Medal of Honor Citation: One of the 19 of 22 men (including
2 civilians) who, by direction of Gen. Mitchell (or Buell),
penetrated nearly 200 miles south into enemy territory and
captured a railroad train at Big Shanty, Ga., in an attempt
to destroy the bridges and track between Chattanooga and
Atlanta.
[2479]
On Knight's gravestone this line is inscribed: "Engineer of
Andrews Raid in Georgia, APR 12, 1862."
