Seneca Downer's place and date of death are problematic:
The book, The Downers of America (p.182) gives his date of
death as as 7 Mar 1877, however, this is the same date as
presented for his wife Matilda who appears alone in the
census' of 1850 and later (ref: Warn Tree). The Warn
reference has also confirmed that Matilda was burried in
March 1877 - so I will question the death date for Seneca.
There is also the question of where Seneca died. The
Downers of America gives Seneca's place of death as North
East, PA, and then goes on to say that an alternate source
gives the place of death as Vassar, MI. A Mr. Byron Keagle
has submitted a record of Seneca Downer to the LDS Ancestral
File (AFN: 23K9-W8K) which gives his place of death as Port
Huron, St. Clair Co., MI. If in fact Seneca had separated
from his wife as the census records would indicate, Michigan
appears to be a logical place to relocate given that nearly
all his brothers and sisters relocated and died in there.
However, Seneca is recorded in the household of his son Ezra
in the 1870 census for Syracuse, NY at the age of 78.

The Downers of America identifies Seneca with Erie and North
East, PA, and Matilda with Buffalo, NY. It is therefore
reasonable to assume that their marriage was recorded in one
or the other of those three locations, and most likely
Buffalo given that was Matilda's home.
