Col. Austin served actively in battles of Guilford Court
House, Musgrove Mill and Kettle Creek. Burried beside his
wife at Bethel Methodist Church Cemetary near Simpsonville,
SC. His grave is marked "Sacred to the Memory of Col.
William Austin Who Was Born in Va. Mar. 27, 1759. Died
Feb.23, 1841. In Tribute Of Respect, Gratitude For His
Paternal Care And Affection, This Stone Has Been Dedicated
By His Children." -- Elinor Walker
In Aurelia Austin's book titled: "Captain Nathaniel (Nathan)
Austin and His Sons in The American Revolution (p232),"
there is a facsimile of a letter written to George P. Austin
by Charles W. Austin of Hapesville, Georgia. The Letter is
dated October 10, 1911. The letter states that "William
Austin swore vengeance (for the killing of William's sister
Mary) and later fought a duel with the chief and killed him.
His revengeful spirit was not satisfied with the death of
the chief, he afterwards spent a great deal of his time
hunting Indians. I am told by old people at Greenville, S.
C. that their fathers told them that no one knows how many
Indians William Austin killed and threw into the river at
Greenville."
The letter goes into further detail regarding the marriage
of William and Jane Collins. "In the year 1785 he married
Jane Collins, a descendant of the Royal family of Scotland.
Old man Collins was much opposed to Bill Austin (William)
courting his gal Jane, because Nat Austin was a descendant
of the Royal family of England (I do not know whether the
Austins were the Kings boot black or the master of the
hounds, the latter I expect). Any way the Austins had a coat
of arms and so did the Collins but they were not on kissing
terms. So, old man Collins threatened to kill William if he
did not stay away from his premises. But love finds away.
Willie had a chum to borrow Mr. Collin's dog and gun to go
hunting, and while they were away Col. William Austin took
Janie on his horse behind him and they took their
everlasting elopement to the nearest parson, and they lived
happily ever after."
