There has been some question as to Mary's year of birth.
Mary's second husband, W.A. Knight, in a letter to his son
Harry cites 1857 as her birthdate. Other sources have
referenced 1858. Charles Lenhart cites Mary's birthdate as
1852, which seems most logical considering the reported
second marriage of her father Clark Wilbur to Margaret
Thompson in 1853, with children of that marriage born in
1854, 1856, 1858, 1861 and 1865. If Mary was born in 1857,
that would imply that her mother was Margaret Thompson and
not Eleanor McElhaney. However, in the same letter that
W.A. Knight gives Mary's birthdate as 1857, he specifically
identifies Eleanor McElhaney as his mother in law and
further names Eleanor's parents. All of this is resolved by
the 1860 census which gives Mary's age as 7 at the time of
the census in June.
