preponderance of sources on-line record the name as Van
Cleve or Van Cleave.

Rachel married John VanCleave following the death of his
first wife, Mary Shepherd, and her first husband, Gerardus
Ryker - both of whom were killed by Indians near present day
Shelby, KY. Mary was killed 14 September 1781 at the battle
known as the Long Run Massacre (also known as Boone's
Defeat). Gerardus was killed the following day, 15
September 1781 at the battle of Floyd's Defeat as part of a
burial party sent out to bury the victims of the previous
day's massacre.
