Barney Oldfield was perhaps the greatest of the pioneers of
auto racing. He began his career racing bicycles for the
Sterns factory racing team. In 1902 he was campaigning a
motorized bicycle when Henry Ford asked him to drive one of
two race cars Ford had built. But the cars wouldn't start
when Oldfield arrived to test them, and Ford sold the cars
to Oldfield and his partner for $800. On Memorial Day 1903,
Oldfield became the first man to complete a one-mile closed
course in under a minute, driving his Ford-Cooper No.999.
And on March 16, 1910, Oldfield set the World speed record
of 131.73 miles per hour on the sands of Daytona Beach.
Oldfield was the consummate showman, criss-crossing the
country to put on exhibitions and match races at county
fairs and other "unsanctioned" events - even racing against
airplanes. Unfortunately, these outlaw exhibitions led to
his being banned by the official sanctioning bodies from
competing in the most prestigious races of his time. He
officially retired from racing in 1918, but remained close
to the sport as a spokesman and technical advisor to
Firestone Tires.
[5137]
Beatrice and Barney were divorced in 1906. Peggy OLeary
cites marriage date as 25 AUG 1896.
[5138] Barney married Bess for a second time.
