It is uncertain from the records whether John Conrad
Knecht/Knight was married once, twice or more.
The Knight History, as compiled by Harry S. Knight and
referenced elsewhere in several of its different forms,
identifies a woman named Croix as the wife of John Conrad.
This information is reported to have come from Lewis Knight,
son of David Knight (the grandson of John Conrad
Knecht/Knight), who stated in his lifetime that his father
had told him that John Conrad Knight had married a French
woman by the name of Crois or Croy.
John Conrad Knecht and Maria appear as a witnesses at the
baptisms of Catherine and Jacob Wolff's children in 1776 and
1779. Catherine is reasoned to be John Conrad Knight's
daughter as evidenced by his last will and testament. Maria
Knecht (grandmother) and Maria Karst/Knecht appear as
witnesses to the baptism of Andrew and Anna Klein's son
Andrew and daughter Catherine in 1785 and 1787 respectivley.
Baptismal records of the Conewago Dutch Reformed Church,
Straban Twp, record the baptisms of Cornelius (1774), Marta
(1777), Derrick (1772) and Madelena (1780) as the children
of Johannes Koinrat/Koinrate/Koenraat Knegt/Knectt/Kneght
and Marija/Maria Kraaij/Kraij/Kray/Krey. The similarity of
spellings and timeframes suggest that Maria Croix/Karst/Kray
were one and the same person.
However, there is also the story that the mother of John
Conrad's son Richard had died by the time of the
Revolutionary War, and so young Richard accompanied his
father when he went to war and served as a drummer boy.
