is arrested near Los Vegas

Warren Steeps Jeffs, 49, was indicted on two

felony counts by an Arizona county grand jury

on May 4, 2006. He is the self-proclaimed “prophet” of the secretive, polygynous** Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ

of Latter Day Saints (FLDS), an offshoot of the Mormon Church of Utah. He took control of the church in September 02 when his father died at age 92, leaving 75 (?) widows and 65 children. Church “prophet” for 16 years, the father had abolished the

seven-member Priesthood Council and

established one man rule, making himself

God’s mouthpiece on Earth.

Warren Jeffs is accused ordering a 16 year-old congregant to marry an already-married 28 year-old male member of the church. Jeffs is also charged with conducting the marriage ceremony which led to sexual contact between a man and a minor girl. He, his church and his United Effort Plan Trust (the UEP, net worth: $100 million plus) have also been served with various civil charges including sexual abuse of a young boy. His church refuses to recognize government authority and its “prophet” has previously refused to answer court summonses. He is now one of the FBI's most wanted fugatives with a $100,000 reward offered for his capture.

Shortly after his indictment a caravan of vehicles was seen leaving Colorado City, one of his twin walled communities of some 6 to 10 thousand on the Utah-Arizona border (Colorado City, Ariz., and Hildale, Utah), wholly owned by the church - the UEP provides most jobs and owns all church member's property and homes. The founding of twin cities on state borders offers quick escape from authorites from any one state. After purchasing land for the Yearning for Zion (YFZ) Ranch in Eldorado, Texas, there was a shift in the headquarters of the church along with a large exodus of the "most faithful" church members. The church also has a colony in British Columbia.

Jeffs was arrested without a struggle late Monday, August 28, 2006, after a police traffic stop near Las Vegas because his red 2007 Cadillac Escalade’s temporary Colorado tag was obstructed. He was traveling with one of his wives and a brother and his car contained laptop computers, cell phones, a collection of wigs and $50,000 in cash but no weapons. The bigamist could face up to five years to life on each of the two most serious counts, accessory to rape for arranging marriages to two under-age brides in Utah.

"The Law of Placing"

The theology of the FLDS is revealed directly from God to the prophet and through the prophet God is revealed. God loves satisfied husbands and sanctifies women only for fulfilling this purpose. The prophet must assign all wives to their husbands and officiate at all marriages; wives thereafter “belong” to their husbands for eternity. If the prophet is pleased, he may assign several wives for the same man and, if he is displeased, he may punish by assigning a man’s wife, children and house to another man. The highest glory in heaven is reached by men who have at least three wives. Warren Jeffs is thought to have over 50 wives.

Obedience is compulsory and it is rare for wives to resist reassignment in this polygynous “faith.” Members who disobey the prophet’s orders or violate church rules are routinely excommunicated, separated from their families and kicked out of their church-owned homes. Some 400 to 1000 young males have been excommunicated in recent years to maintain a high number of young females for polygynous marriages to older men who are required to provide huge amounts of money to Jeffs. About one-third of the membership is reported to receive state or federal financial aid, leading to allegations of welfare fraud.

The Southern Poverty Law Center’s 2005 "Intelligence Report" placed the FLDS in its "Hate Groups," citing the church’s racist teachings. According to Jeffs, "The black race is the people through which the devil has always been able to bring evil unto the earth."

The arrest warrant is "a huge step because it sends a message to the FLDS and every other man who talks to God that he is not above the law," said a former FLDS member who has helped women escape from the grip of this particular prophet.       Amen.
