The Case of
the Islamic Academy in Washington, D.C.
The 'Ayn-Al-Yaqeen article
added, "it is not surprising that King Fahd Ibn Abd Al-Aziz initiated a program to establish Islamic academies in some of
the major capitals of the world…Amongst them is the Islamic Academy in Washington, D.C. established in 1984. The academy
has 1,200 students... 549 are Saudis. The rest represent 29 nationalities." A report in The Washington Post
on July 11, 2002, explained that the Saudi academy now educates about 1,300 students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade
on two campuses in northern Virginia, with a dual American and Middle Eastern curriculum.
Muslim educators say the academy
is unlike other Muslim schools in the United States, many of which struggle for resources, in part because it is heavily funded
by Saudi Arabia. Some Islamic studies classes at the school use Saudi Arabian textbooks that promote hatred of other religions.
The Saudi Islamic Academy lost its accreditation and withdrew its membership from a respected association of private schools
in Virginia following an unwelcome inquiry. According to sources, the association raised questions regarding the Academy's
funding sources, as well as voiced concern about the substance of the Academy's curriculum.

IN NATION’S CAPITOL
On November
12, 2007, 12 U.S. Senators called on the State Department follow up
on 2006 agreement made with the government of Saudi Arabia on improving the freedom of religion in Saudi Arabia and stopping the export of religious extremism.
The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom had previously recommended the closing
of this Saudi-financed and directed Islamic Academy of Washington, D.C.
The Commission’s report of Thursday, October 18, 2007 included a broad criticism of religious discriminations
in Saudi society and the fostering of religious extremism at Saudi schools around the world. The report states that the Islamic
Academy in the nation’s capitol hews closely to the general curriculum used at other Saudi schools, with its promotion
of hatred of and intolerance against Jews, Christians and Shi’ite Muslims, as well as polytheists, homosexuals, dervishes,
blasphemers, apostates and many other types of condemnable infidels.

the Saudi U.S. Ambassador
For the sake of the promotion of Religious Freedom, the Commission asks the State Department
to prevail on the Saudi Royal proselytizers to shut down the 1000-student Islamic Academy pending a review of the school’s
textbooks, procedures and academic structure, plus the installation of safeguards from influence from the Saudi Arabian embassy.
The Saudi ambassador to the United States serves as the chairman of the Academy's board of directors,
raising "serious concerns about whether it is in violation of a U.S. law restricting the activities of foreign embassies."
Continued Saudi Denial
A 2006 report sponsored by Freedom House detailed the Islamist extremism, including
intolerance and hatred, for other religions still unmediated in school curricula in Saudi Arabia. The Saudi kingdom’s government has continued
to deny such institutionalized indoctrinations and incitements in its schools. Abdullah Al-Shabnan, the director of the Saudi
Academy, also continues to deny the claims while continuing to refuse making its curricula available to the American government
and news media.
Islam is Peace
In 2005, a former class valedictorian, Ahmed Omar Abu Ali, was charged and soon convicted for joining al-Qaeda while
being “schooled” in Saudi Arabia and for plotting to assassinate the U.S. President. He is appealing his sentence
of 30 years in prison. The director-general of the Islamic Academy (a fountain of fearful ideology from the world’s
most isolated religious-police state) said about the Commission Report, "We have an open policy."

Now,

It is time for Americans to nourish and demonstrate

progressive forces in an arena dominated by

How are we to protect ourselves?

just beat people up is clearly not a progressive approach!
To give up personal liberties gained in a thousand years of
struggle -
- to sacrifice freedom from arbitrary search and seizure in the name of
illusory security -
is not a progressive option!
Yes, Citizens, we are indeed at war -- a holy
war.

So, let us all please begin to treat this problem from an elevated point of view,
which surely
will result, somehow, in choices of expressions of Love.

How deeply does Wahhabism run through Saudi society? "Saudis are very pious, they
are conservative, but they did not create this extremism," said (he) emphatically. "It's politics. This version of religion

The regime supports the imams, judges and teachers. And people don't hear

The key to the kingdom is not religion but politics. To understand why, you only

the number of Islamist Web sites that detail the extravagance of the royal family…"The fear is that if they (the ruling

toleration. That cause was the stepping-stone to the Enlightenment, the democratic
revolution and modernization in the West and shaped the American foundation and creed.
“The tolerant
model” of Islam predominated into the twentieth century as the Egyptian thinker Tarek Heggy reminds us. The revival
of that model could revitalize and facilitate the process of integrating Muslims into the modern world.
But it
will not be easy. Thanks to the close connection between mosque and state, the separation of church and state will be a challenge
for Islam. The mosque’s minbar traditionally served as a platform for the announcement of appointment and dismissal
of officials, the installation of rulers, news of war and conquest. Sharia
was Allah’s law, supposed to rule all men and to take precedence over any man-made law.
Given their transnational organization, their historical commitment and their enmity to religious freedom, we should
expect a long twilight struggle against Saudi-Sunni terrorism, irrespective of the capture of Osama.
