Today, 8/5/2006, I went to a funeral for Ethel Frederick in Forest Grove PA in Bucks County.  This pretty little old church (1855) is really in the boon docks - not to mention the little town of Wycombe PA.  Time stopped 100 years ago for these little villages.

Mary Graff, Pearl Poorman & Kenny Dick

We visited the Graffs, i.e. Fred Graff, Mary Stoddard Graff and Anna Graff every year when I was a kid.  I loved coming to Philadelphia.  Sometimes Aunt Hazel and Uncle Bill brought me, and sometiimes Mom & Dad.  Mary was Great Uncle Bill Stoddard's sister. They lived on Olive Street, right behind 2601 Parkway on the corner, and behind the Insurance Building.  Their block of row houses is no longer there.  The entrance to the street was through the Arch on the left hand side of the insurance building.  They removed the street, and it is now part of the insurance building property.  There is a little corner restaurant on the other end of the block.  Mary moved up toward Girard College after Fred died.  It was always great fun visiting them.  Anna introduced me to Pizza for the first time.  And I remember her taking me to the Hungry Pig in Willow Grove once for a trough of ice cream.  They also used to take us up to see Frank & Nellie, Fred's brother.  They were really nice folks too.  I think Frank's son owned a little grocery store in the neighborhood, and worked for the highway department.  I think Anna lives in New Jersey now, but I don't know her married name, so haven't been able to locate her for years.  I think those visits to the Graff's is what led me to want to live in the Philadelphia area, as I do today.

A prayer every day for Mother Angelica.

En el nombre del Padre, y del Hijo, y del Espiritu Santo. Amen.

Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy name.  Thy kingdon come, Thy will be done, on Earth, as it is in Heaven.  Give us this day, our daily Bread, and forgive us our tresspasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  Amen.

Hail Mary, full of Grace, the Lord is with thee.  Blessed art thou amongst women, and Blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.  Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now, and at the hour of our death, Amen.

Gloria al Padre, y al Hijo, y al Espiritu Santo. Como era en el principio, ahora, y siempre por los siglos de los siglos. Amen.

En el nombre del Padre, y del Hijo, y del Espiritu Santo. Amen.

I remember climbing the telephone poles along the dirt road to Bitumen PA and working on the open wire leads.  Boy, that was a long time ago.  Bitumen is another little "back-in-time" village in PA - a Slovak town.

Founder of CURE

Star Parker founded CURE ten years ago to address problems of race and poverty in America and to get the word into inner cities that poverty must be addressed through faith and personal responsibility and not through big government programs.  I read her column in The Times Herald - and find myself agreeing with her a lot.  Check out Star's website.
