Wooden canoes!

These boats just don't look good - they are very strong!

Of course Zip (an avid canoer and somewhat of celebrity in canoe circles in Maine) knew of a wooden canoe shop on the way to Ragged – the Newfound Woodworks – and we just HAD to stop in – and I was glad we did.  Mike the owner met us and walked us through how they mill the parts of a canoe and send them out as do-it-yourself kits.  Housed in what looked like an old mill building the shop surrounded us with that great cedar smell – a perfume I could inhale all day long.  This concept of building a canoe in two-inch wide strips with a special epoxy is intriguing.  Building a cedar canoe from a kit is a great idea – what better way for an owner to get closer to his craft than to build it strip by strip – my hat is off to you Mike.
