Bob and his Chickens
|
 |
Heading out of Yawgoo in semi-rural Rhode Island
a “Fresh Eggs for Sale” sign tilting along side the road caught my attention – I had to check it out. I drove down a long and very curvy dirt road to come to a well kept colonial flanked
by a barn and yes, the chicken sheds. I have always like small chicken sheds
(not the mammoth chicken factories that used to dot the Maine landscape) since wandering through the abandoned chicken shed
in my backyard growing up in Bangor Maine. I could not pass up a chance to see
who would operate a small egg enterprise such as this. I was not let down. I was greeted by Bob, an tall, slow talking – easy going retired man and, sensing
my excitement, he immediately agreed to let me view his chicken shed and see the “Rhode Island Reds” (of course),
“Black Sex Links” (not made up) chickens. Not a large flock but enough
to pay for this wonderful hobby.
Bob also sold split firewood and a ran
a tree farm in addition to his chicken business. Are these more traits of
the New England character – fascinating hobbies and entrepreneurial? I
could not think of three better ways to get outside and be productive with your retirement time – sure beats vegetating
in front of a TV. You have a great collection of hobbies Bob – keep it
up.
This was a one mountain
day so off I was back home from Rhode Island.
