Motorcycle Diaries

I made a life changing decision following a recent doctors appointment. My physician burdened me with the grave news that I was dying. According to his best expert opinion, I had 30 to 40 years left to live, fifty at the very most.

That is when I dedicated myself to living a more adventurous life.

Take a moment to think about your legacy. What will you be remembered for after you pass? Will you be remembered as a nice guy who worked hard, played by the rules and kept his grass cut?  Personally, I can't think of anything more dreadful.

To be collectively remembered as a nice guy by those attending my funeral would mean that my life's mission was a failure. I would much prefer to be a "colorful character," "one of a kind," or a "tough old bird."

Wouldn't you rather be remembered for your adventurous spirit, your insatiable curiousity and your stubborn determination to press on with your travels in spite of bad weather, mechanical problems, lack of creature comfort and pesky interference by rebel guerilla soldiers?

I have a 10-year plan to save up the funds and gain the knowledge and skills needed to embark on a journey worthy of a National Geographic special. I intend to travel to Alaska, Montana, California, Baja, Mexico, Central America, making a few key stops in South America and Cuba in the space of a year.

An ambitious goal, but every journey begins with a single step.

The content of this site is terribly mundane and by any measure, a waste of time, server storage space and bandwidth, but it is my earnest hope that this site, the adventures documented within and my dreadfully ordinary life become more interesting as time passes. Everything is a work in progress.

In the film "The Motorcycle Diaries," el Poderoso was a 1936 Norton 500 thumper that broke down often.

I chose to name my R100GS el Poderoso mostly because it was just a cool name and because one day, I plan to retrace the moto journey of Ernesto "Che" Guevara and his friend Alberto Granado, the difference being that I will have a superior machine, thus completing the journey and continuing on to Mexico and Cuba.
