Q: Where is anime broadcast in the US?
A: Cartoon Network currently airs anime in its Toonami branded block (Saturday evenings) and its Adult Swim branded
block (Monday through Thursday and Saturday late nights). The Adult Swim block has a disclaimer that content may be inappropriate
for those under 14, although Cartoon Network has a set of programming standards, and tends to shy away from more controversial
anime.
The Anime Network is a video-on-demand service offered on many digital cable systems in the US, often at no additional
charge. Anime Network shows all programming unedited, and they do not confirm to any particular broadcast standards. They
are also launching a regular cable network, and it is unclear at this time if they will be choosing or editing content based
on any particular programming standards.
G4 (formerly G4TechTV) shows anime every night in a late night programming block called Anime Unleashed. Occasionally,
they will air anime in other time periods, such as a marathon running through the afternoon and evening.
The International Channel occasionally shows anime during the evenings and late night.
Starz/Encore Action Channel occasionally shows anime films and series unedited.
Networks like Fox and UPN often have anime as part of their children’s programming. These series are usually either
created or edited to fit children’s programming standards; but spiritually controversial content may still be included
(see "Content Issues" q and a’s about possibly objectionable content).
Q: What are alternative methods of obtaining anime, other then watching on cable/satellite television?
A: Many Blockbuster Video stores have a selection of anime available for rental. The selection varies by location,
and tends to be heavily focused on one distributor (ADV). Other video stores may carry anime for rental as well.
Online/mail video rental services such as Netflix and Blockbuster carry a much larger selection of anime.
Most Best Buy and Sun Coast Video locations carry a significant amount of anime for sale. And there are multitudes of online
retailers that either carry anime as part of their overall selection (such as Amazon) or specialize in selling anime.
Downloading off the internet is another way some people acquire anime. This will be discussed in a future Q and A section.
