In 1997: the garden contained the following butterfly-attracting plants: American Holly, Bee Balm, Black-Eyed Susan, Blue Cardinal Flower (Great Blue Lobelia), Butterfly Bush, Butterfly Weed, Catmint (Nepeta siberica), Catnip, Sweet Garlic Chives (Allium tuberosum), Common Milkweed, Common Blue Violet (Viola papilionacea) (caterpillar host plant for Fritillaries), Daisy Fleabane, Dandelion, Dill, Dogbane, Phlox "Chattahoochee" (Phlox divaricata), Globe Amaranth (Gomphrena globosa), Ground Ivy (Gill-over-the Ground), Heath Aster, Hop Vine (Humulus lupulus) (caterpillar host plant for Question Mark and Eastern Comma), Joe-Pye Weed, Common Lambsquarters (Chenopodium album) (caterpillar host plant for Hayhurst’s Scallopwing), Late-Flowering Boneset (Eupatorium serotinum), Lavender, Liatris, Mexican Sunflower (Tithonia), Mint, Mist Flower (Ageratum), Mustard Greens, New England Aster, Oregano (Origanum vulgare), Oriental Lilies (Lilium speciosum), Parsley (Petroselinum crispum), Privet (Ligustrum vulgare), Purple Coneflower, Red Clover,, Sedum (Autumn Joy), Showy Coneflower, Small White Aster, Seaside Goldenrod, Shasta Daisy, Smooth Aster, Stiff Goldenrod, Swamp Milkweed (Asclepias incarnata), Thyme , Pink Turtlehead (Cheloni lyoni), Verbena (Verbena tenera), White Clover (Trifolium repens), and Wild Bergamot (Monarda fistulosa).

Butterfly-attracting plants added in 1998: Collard Greens, Common Sage (Salvia officinalis), Marigolds, Scarlet Runner Beans (caterpillar host plant for Long-tailed Skipper), and Bloodflower (Asclepias curassavica).

Butterfly-attracting plants added in 1999: Brazilian Verbena (Verbena bonariensis), Zinnia, Marjoram, Salvia "Blue Bedder," Snapdragons, and Cosmos.

Butterfly-attracting plants added in 2000: Eastern Redcedar, Maryland Wild Senna, Spicebush (Lindera benzoin), and Little Bluestem.

Butterfly-attracting plants added in 2001: Bronze Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare), Dame's Rocket (Hesperis matronalis), Winter Cress (Barbarea species), Wingstem (Actinomeris alternifolia) and Lantana (Patriot Passion).

Added in 2002: Tickseed Sunflower, False Nettles.

To try in the future: Pentas, Pincussion flower (scabiosa).
