In my butterfly garden, I like to keep some plants in pots (mostly plastic pots) on my patio and lining the driveway. These are the potted plants that I have had the most success with in attracting butterflies:

Bloodflower (Asclepia currasavica)

Blue Cardinal Flower (Great Blue Lobelia) (Lobelia siphilitica)

Brazilian Verbena (Verbena bonariensis)

Catnip: I have this pot primarily for the pleasure of cats, but I often see cabbage whites nectaring on it.

Globe Amaranth (Gomphrena globosa)

Heliotrope

Lantana

Marigold

Mint

Mist Flower (Wild Ageratum) (Eupatorium coelestinum):

Radishes: These attract cabbage white butterflies and their caterpillars.

Rue: A host plant for black swallowtail butterflies.
