Sweet Afterglow

For Barbara

Sweet Afterglow

The years have been so kind to me—

To bring you to me at a time

When days are soft and years are gold,

And there is time to bask in life’s

Sweet afterglow.

A roaring fire pleases all,

But in the embers intense afterglow,

There’s comfort, peace and lasting warmth

That keeps rekindling in the fire’s

Sweet afterglow.

Your beauty grows with each new day;

Your kindness with each passing hour;

And all that you have ever been

Survives in this eternal fire’s

Sweet afterglow.

The years pass by like fireflies;

They flicker on and off like fireflies.

But love and trust will always glow,

And our love still burns bright in this

Sweet afterglow.
