Reason why we should impeach the president

Why George Bush Should Be Impeached

Let’s review. George Bush ran in 2000 as a moderate Republican—a “compassionate conservative.” He lied! Immediately after the election he made a sharp right turn and joined forces with the ultra-conservative, evangelical wing of the Republican Party. I don’t have a problem with anybody holding whatever political views they want to hold; I do have a problem with them lying to me about what they are.

George Bush said he would be a uniter, not a divider. He lied! He has done nothing to unite the Democrats and Republicans in Congress or the diverse segments of society. Never have I seen such a chasm between liberals and conservatives—not even during Vietnam. An approval rating in the 30’s indicates that few Americans would vote for Bush again, yet every day his administration digs in deeper, stonewalls and continues to purposely alienate the left, moderates and even his own base.

George Bush billed himself as fiscally responsible when he ran for president. He lied! Left with the largest fiscal surplus in America’s history, he turned it into the largest deficit in our history. He has borrowed more money from foreign countries, like China, than all other presidents before him combined.

George Bush said tax cuts for the rich and for corporations would bolster the economy and create jobs. He lied! The economy is stalled; there are no manufacturing jobs; underemployment is at an all-time high. The middle class has seen no significant advances, and 80% of the wealth of the country is controlled by 10% of the population—the 10% that benefit from Bush’s tax cuts.

George Bush has stated that he was ordained by God to lead this country, He lied! God does not ordain presidents and certainly not ones who practice cronyism and deception, who watch while people suffer through disasters and do nothing, and who send young men and women off to die in a war based on lies.

George Bush said that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction, that Iraq was a training ground for Al-Quaida, that he was in league with Osama Bin Laden and that he was pursuing a nuclear capability. He lied! Either that or he and his advisors are the most stupid people alive for committing our soldiers to war based on such inconsistent and obviously distorted intelligence. The 9/11 commission has disproven all of the assumptions for the war. I’d like to think that those at the head of our government are not idiots, so I’ll have to assume they lied.

Bush promised to uphold the duties of the office of president which involves abiding by the laws of the country. He lied! His administration has selectively leaked classified information for political purposes, conducted illegal wire tapping of American citizens and held American citizens illegally without bringing charges against them.

Let’s review some other qualities of George Bush that, if not reasons for impeachment, shed light on the character of this man. He believes in Creationsim. This theory posits that man lived side by side with the dinosaurs and that the world is only 10,000 years old. Now I know that Bush graduated from Yale, but I’m sure that Creationism is not taught there or anywhere by responsible scientists. His evangelical views and agenda border on a violation of separation of church and state.

George Bush doesn’t read. For those of us who read a wide range of books, newspapers and journals, that is reason enough for impeachment. What kind of shallow, arrogant, pompous fool thinks that he doesn’t need to read and can still make decisions that affect all of our lives.

George Bush can’t speak effectively and does not sound like a convincing or commanding orator. When he has to depart from prepared speeches—prepared by others—he is at a loss. He obviously lost all of the debates with John Kerry. If a man can’t express himself, how can he make policy decisions affecting millions of people.

George Bush’s administration is headed for ignominy in the eyes of historians. Already a majority of historians view his presidency as a failure; 12% view Bush as the worst president ever. Worse yet is the deterioration of the image of the United States in the eyes of the world under Bush’s watch. The ugly American has never been uglier. The world knows that the Iraq war was based on lies and can no longer trust us. Now Bush is rattling sabers with Iran, threatening, amazingly enough, a nuclear attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities. This is because Bush has no negotiating ability, no respect from other countries and the arrogance to think he can do whatever he wants.

George Bush is a danger and a liability to the United States. He has not shown us yet that he can lead us down any good and productive path, only ill-conceived, rash and self-serving paths. We should impeach him now because, with his mentality, these lame-duck years are even more dangerous because he can do anything he wants.
