The Aussie Bulldog

This is the Aussie (Australian) Bulldog. I've been hearing about these dogs for some time now and I have been wondering what to expect when I finally secured some information about them. As it turns out, these aren't bred to be working dogs at all, but rather simply a healthy alternative to the English Bulldog.

The Aussie Bulldog was (and is being) created by one Pip Nobes of Queensland, Australia. The foundation stock is English Bulldog, Boxer, Bullmastiff and Bull Terrier.

No offense to the Aussie Bulldog or to it creator, but this really isn't my kind of dog. The reason for this is that this "breed" really doesn't attempt to perpetuate or recreate any breed of the past in its true form. Neither does it have any function, other than to be a pet. Instead, it attempts to be a healthier version of a breed that itself is little more than a showman's idea of what a purebred of the past might have been. On the other hand, the originator of this breed is being honest about the underlying genetics of the breed and that's a lot more than we can say about many who maintain "rare, ancient breeds" today. Furthermore, any effort to improve the health of some of these show breeds is a worthwhile one in my opinion.

The above pictures come from the Australian Magazine "Burke's Backyard" which was sent to me by Ian O'Neill of Tasmania, Australia.
