This is one of the first Boerboel dogs to come to the United States. It is owned by Dave Karson. When I took this picture this dog was a day shy of three months of age. It was 48 pounds already (out of a 160 pound father) and when I leaned over to pat it goodbye, it let out a huge roar, turned like lightening, and bit me. The Boerboel is a fine dog for parts of South Africa but city dwelling Americans, Europeans and Asians had better think long and hard before bringing one home. This is not a dog for "I want you to THINK I have a big, tough dog but we both know I could never really handle one", show folk. It's a serious, working breed.

This is adult, male Boerboel "Bobby" owned by Daanie De Bod. Bobby is out of Smit "Shena" by Mizpah "Lukas". This dog is pictured here at 14 months of age and it's type has not yet been assessed by "SABBA" (The South African Boerboel Breeder's Association). Photo taken around Capetown by Malcolm Wren.

Incidentally, all of your questions about the Boerboel are answered in my third book on dogs, entitled "Gladiator Dogs". That book, complete with an extensive Boerboel chapter, is currently available from TFH Publications of Neptune, New Jersey at 1-800-631-2188
