Anthony David Benedetto is a native of Wakefield, Massachusetts and a graduate of the Wakefield Memorial High School, Class of 1981.  His undergraduate education and training was obtained from the United States Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, New York.  When he graduated in 1985, he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Marine Engineering, a Commission as Ensign in the United States Navy Reserves and a United States Coast Guard, Merchant Marine Officer License, as Third Assistant Engineer, Steam or Diesel Power Plants, Unlimited Horsepower.  His graduate level education was obtained from the United States Naval War College, College of Continuing Education, Newport, Rhode Island.

Commander Benedetto's training and accomplishments include over 300 days at sea aboard US flag merchant ships serving as an engineering cadet (midshipman).  During this at-sea training, he was an active part of the ship's engineering team and successfully completed numerous power plant system and component repairs and maintenance.   An integral part of his experience included learning every aspect of ship and power plant design, operations, repair and maintenance.  His activities included in-depth research and engineering review of all ship systems and components including all main and auxiliary steam and electrical power generation and distribution systems and components, HVAC and all support systems/components.  He also performed watchstanding, navigational calculations, maneuvering operations and other bridge and deck operations as required.  By the time his sea training was completed, Commander Benedetto visited six of the seven continents (Antarctica will be the seventh) and numerous countries and islands.

While attending the Merchant Marine Academy, Commander Benedetto was called upon to serve the Administration as a linguistic interpreter during visits by high level foreign dignitaries.

Upon graduation from the Merchant Marine Academy, Commander Benedetto performed two-weeks of Active Duty Training (ACDUTRA), annually, in the United States Navy Reserves.  He fulfilled his military obligation and received very favorable fitness reports from all commands.  His military training has been performed at Navy facilities throughout the U. S. and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.  As a result of his continued and successful training, he was promoted to Commander in 2001.

From 1985 - 1990, Commander Benedetto served in engineering and management positions for the United States Navy in Charleston, SC and Groton, CT.  In June 1990, he was selected as the Assistant Propulsor Program Manager for the Navy's newest and most technologically advanced submarine, the SSN21 (SEAWOLF) Fast Attack Submarine under the Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research, Development and Acquisition, Washington, DC.  Under the Direct Reporting Program Manager, including Admirals Firebaugh, Shipway, Combs and Sullivan, Commander Benedetto and his team of consultants achieved unprecedented advancements in submarine propulsion stealth, performance and logistics.
