(March 98 news item) Soph. Fred Staton (West Charlotte) will be academically ineligible to compete during the '98 outdoor track season. Staton had the 5th fastest 100m time (10.67) in the state last year as a 9th grader at Charlotte Country Day School. He was also National AAU Jr. Olympic Champion for his age group in the 100 and 200. Staton bettered the 2.0 GPA required by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools but failed to pass five classes his last quarter at Country Day. He will be eligible to play football for W.Charlotte in the fall.
