Saturday, May 29:
Leesville Road rising Senior, Leigh Smith won the men's javelin with a throw
of 189', beating a field of select all-stars from North and South Carolina
in the inaugural Herbster Classic.
Held on the Belk Track at UNC-Charlotte, the Herbster Classic,
billed as the premier All-Star high school track meet in the southeast, featured an
impressive slate of state champions from both sides of the border in all
running and field events.
The 6'6" Smith was a top scorer on Brian Winham's Cap 8 Conference Champion
team in the discus, 110 and 300 hurdles and is nationally-ranked in the men's
javelin. He anticipates a good performance at the upcoming National
Scholastic Open, June 12 at the Paul Derr track at North Carolina State
University. Earlier this season, Smith placed 4th in the men's javelin at the
prestigious Penn Relays and has placed in or won several Div I NCAA meets
thsi spring. He is coached by Jeff Gorski of Chapel Hill. Gorski, a former
All-ACC thrower is the Director of Men's Development for USA Track and Field,
a division of the US Olympic Committee.
Although javelin is not offered as a sanctioned
track and field event by the North Carolina High School Activities Association, Smith is
one of the most highly regarded schoolboy prospects in the nation, according to Coach Gorski.

Saturday, May 23:
Despite the fact javelin is not an NCHSAA sanctioned event, one Raleigh high
school junior has set himself among the nation's elite in the event. Leigh
Smith, 17, a junior on the Leesville Rd. H.S. track team, set a PR in the
javelin at the at the Capitol City Invitational, a USATF Youth meet, held 1
May 1st on the NCSU campus in Raleigh. On May 23, Smith a threw a then-PR of
191' at the Christopher Newport University "Captain's Classic", Newport News,
VA against throwers from Virginia Tech, William & Mary and a few other
smaller schools. Only one day earlier, Smith threw 181' to take 5th at the
prestigious Penn Relays in the high school boys javelin competition.
Smith will compete for the Leesville Rd. Pride this weekend in the regional
meet in Fayetteville. Smith will run the 300 hurdles and throw the discus.
His h.s. coach is Brian Winham.
Smith receives his javelin instruction from Coach Jeff Gorski, of Chapel
Hill. Gorski has been recently named the Director of Olympic development for
the U.S. Olympic team's javelin throwers. He also currently coaches current
U.S. men's champion Tom Pukstys and a number of other top throwers in the
nation. Smith is now in training for the National Scholastic Open and the
USATF Youth Nationals this summer.
In the just-completed Spring '99 season, he competed at Div I
university meets at your school, North Carolina Open, Wake Forest
Invitational, Christopher Newport University "Captain's Classic" and also
the Penn Relays, and made the finals of every meet he participated in against
collegiate competition.

Saturday, April 24:
Penn Relays (Philadelphia): Cardinal Gibbons' Nick Mangum, stormed to third place in horizontal rains, strong winds and cold temperatures in the Penn Relays High School 3000 meter run with a time of 8:30.67. After a poor start, Mangum methodically moved his way up through the pack and with two laps to go challenged the second place runner. The winner, Murrad Campbell (Pine Hill, NJ) took off at the gun and was never seriously challenged.
Saturday, April 3:

Friday, April 2:
Karen Medlin (Athens Drive) won 1st place in the girls 800m at the Raleigh
Relays with a time of 2:21.23.
Friday, March 26:
Watauga's Ricky Brookshire ran a 15:04.77 5,000 meters in the Raleigh Relays to win his
heat by 16 seconds. Teammate David Stroupe ran 15:24.55 to place 6th in his heat.
Saturday, March 20:
Greensboro Grimsley's Kim Jones and Kiki Collins competed in the open
division at the Raleigh Relays (College and Open) at NC State University in Raleigh.
Jones ran 14.90 in the 100m Hurdles with Collins going 12.64 in the 100m.
Thursday, March 11:
Athens Drive's Karen Medlin won the 1600m in 5:27.5 in a dual meet vs Southeast
Raleigh.
