Baita refers to Mountain Hut.
The Baita was used many years ago as a warming hut or refuge from the elements
of the mountain when villagers grazed there livestock or gathered firewood.
Over the years these huts have become vacation cabins to the families who own
them. Some of the cabins have been elaborately renovated in traditional
tyrolean decor.
Today's Baita's have wood burning stoves which also serve as the heating
system. The water used in there sinks comes from a storage tank which captures
rain runoff. Some Baita's can sleep 10 in there second floor lofts. Entrance
into the loft is through a trap door in the ceiling.
Baita's must never be locked per provincial law. The assures that hikers will
always be able to seek shelter if inclement weather should arise. The loft's
trap door can be locked; therefore providing the owners of the Baita a place to
store personnal belongings.
