1881 11th - Mr Haviland and I attended Mr & Mrs Dr Aleen silver wedding wee had a verry pleasant afternoon till about 4 o'clock when it began to rain and snow and kept on till wee got home then it turned to rain and lasted most all night Mr Crow Son & Daughter Emma was here when wee came home

25 - Mrs Mc Kerrow and I went to Detroit I bought my Carpet and Curtains, Wall paper and a good many other things I staid one night with Mrs Mc Kerrow one with Mrs Duncan I called on Mrs Ferguson

2 cups molasses 1/2 cup sugar
1 cup shortening 1 cup buttermilk
2 small teaspoons soda
1/2 teaspoon of ginger & cinnamon each
mix at night rollon your board in the morning,

drain quite dry

when boiling hot put in cucumbers let boil 20 minutes cover tight

take 1/2 teaspoon of capsicun it is cayene pepper

for 1 lb of woolen cloth or yarn
melt in warm water 1/2 oz cream tarter
1 oz pulverized coachineal
add 2 oz muriate of tin
stir until it scalds then put in the goods 1/2 hour

2 oz of Hops boil til the strength is out strain add
boil the hops in 4 qts of boiling water strain

1 pt of gin to preserve it
strain the hops and put all together while it is warm I strained it in a crock when cool bottle it take 1 tablespoon every morning

Color blue for blue cotton carpet rags
5 lbs of rags
4 oz coprice when boiling hot put in your rags let them and drain 15 minutes
take them out and ring out of a strong suds back to the coprice two or three times always wet goods before putting in any die
then mak(e) a die with 4 or 5 Prusiate of Potash 1 ounce oil of vitriol come to a boil drop in the goods for 30 minutes airing a few times
Yellow
for 5 lb of goods
7 oz sugar of lead dip the good 2 hours
make a new die with 4 oz Bishromate potash dip and air until the color suits you
Green
to color green dip your blue rags in yellow die
Miss Bennets recipe for brown
to color Brown for carpet for 10 lbs of rags
1 lb Japonica or catechen
1/2 lb of Bichromat of potash
dissolve the Japonica in a little water then add enough for the die
color in Iron, dissolve the potash in the washing boiler
let the goods remain in the catechen die for 20 minutes
boil all the time
take them out and drain
then put them in the potash water which must be boiling hot
for a dark color leave in 15 minutes
for a light not more than ten minutes
wrins in two or three waters
add one ounce of blue vitroe to the catechen
this die makes a tan color
for mader Red
1 lb madder for three lbs woolen cloth or yarn
let madder come to boiling heat
with water to cover goods one hour
never boilin constantly stiring
rinse out your boiler
dissolve 2 oz coachineal pulverized
in clean soft water bring to a scald
put the cloth in one hour airing often doe not wash the cloths or yarn after coloring
always wet cloth or yarn before putting in a die
washing fluid
1/2 oz Carbonate of ammonia
1/2 oz Carbonate of potash
1 pound Babbots potash
1 coffee cup fluid to a boiler of clothes
