minority Uighur people. A young musician and a beautiful singer from
a socially higher class fall in love. Her family opposes the marriage.
The opera tells of their sufferings and eventual triumphs. (The composer
knows the Uighur music intimately, having lived in Xinjiang Province
for twenty years when in exile.)
